Rice Military Civic Club Meeting Minutes for January 18, 2006

Minutes of General Meeting held January 18, 2006 at Doris Miller Center

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.by the President, Juanita Egan, who served as chair of the meeting. A quorum was present.

President Juanita Egan mentioned upcoming events, including a Social to be held on February 8th at McCain's Market, Heights Blvd. at 6th Street, a Farmers' Market to be held April 2nd at a location to be determined, and a formal dedication of Nellie Keyes Park to be held in May. Times and more details will be in forthcoming announcements, in the newsletter and emails to members.

A motion was made, seconded and passed to waive the reading of the minutes of the last meeting. The minutes of that meeting are on the club's website.

Secretary Jack Hardin presented the club Byalws as revised by the Bylaws Committee, which was comprised of Laurie Adams, Phyllis Akers, and Jack Hardin. Copies of the revised Bylaws were distributed and will be placed on the club's website. On motion made, seconded and passed, a vote on adoption of the new Bylaws will be taken at the next General Meeting.

Treasurer Michelle Wolpert presented a financial report, which was accepted on motion made, seconded and passed. We are solvent.

Vice-President Lisa Murray reported on the Voice of Community survey results to date, which indicated a variety of concerns. The concern receiving the most mention was drainage, which was mentioned in 71% of the surveys returned to date. Other major concerns appear to be sidewalks and gutters, road reconstruction, and parks. Only about 160 surveys have been returned so far, and more need to be solicited. Lisa asked for more volunteers to serve on the Infrastructure Committee.

Outreach Chair Patrick McIlvain recognized runners and workers in the recent marathon and encouraged members to patronize the local businesses who sponsored the club's marathon activities. Patrick gave more information about the Valentine's Social at McCain's on February 8th, an event to be held the morning of March 4th at Nellie Keyes Park, and a parade sponsored by the Super Neighborhood organization and other area civic clubs which will be held the first Saturday of March, 2007. Patrick is also working on the formal dedication ceremonies for Nellie Keyes Park to be held in May, 2006, and will have more announcements about those activities shortly. National Night Out is also scheduled for the first Monday in August at the Doris Miller Center, and the NNO committee will be presenting Good Neighbor Awards then.

Another Citizen Patrol training session is scheduled for January 19th at 6:30 p.m. at the HPD storefront on Shepherd/Durham near 11th Street. Once enough residents have been trained, the patrols can begin.

Reports were made by or about various activity groups being formed, including Kids in the Household, Book Club, Wine Tasting, Running, Golf (proposed), Soccer (proposed), Yoga, Quilting, and Cooking. The club will support these groups by helping to publicize them, but club dues will not be used for the activity groups, which will do their own fundraising if funds are required.

The deadline for articles/advertising for the next club newsletter is February 22, 2006.
The next General Meeting will be held on April 19, 2006, at 7:00 p.m. at the Doris Miller Center. The next executive committee (board) meeting is tentatively scheduled for April 12, 2006.

On motion made, seconded and passed, the meeting was adjourned at 8:10 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Jack Hardin, Secretary
